So I went for an interview for a marketing job at an ‘adult entertainment’ company based in London. It’s not that I’ve held any long-term ambition to work in porn, but I’ve been feeling it’s time for a change and the ad did appear in the most respectable of newspaper job pages. It didn’t explicitly say that it was a gay company, but from the picture of a hot, half-naked male model in the ad, I took the bait!
Arriving at the company’s headquarters located in prestigious City of London financial district with all its immaculately-suited and aggressive bankers the first thing that struck me was how legitimate it appeared. I had expected some industrial shed down a rough looking back alley, but this was prime real estate. I walked through the doors into the main reception area servicing the entire building and stated my reason for being there to the young receptionist, wondering if she had any idea what sort of business was being run on the ground floor through those double doors and if she thought I was applying for a job in front of the camera.
One of the directors greeted me after a few minutes and invited me through. I followed him into a conference room with a large, rectangular table, teleconferencing equipment and lots of chairs. We passed a few rooms on our way but nothing to suggest this was a porn business. In fact this room was the kind of environment you would expect any normal interview to take place, with only the odd thong and pair of stilettos on the floor and clothes rail supporting various uniforms in the corner giving anything away. The interview itself, however, was not run-of-the-mill and answering questions about sex and porn from my own perspective did take some getting use to – I have to say that I’d never used the word ‘wank’ in an interview until then.
The two owners had a bit of double-act routine going on and couldn’t be more different – one slightly shy and quietly spoken, and the other bombastic and in-your-face. They introduced their websites to me and I wasn’t expecting one of the guys to be performing, which made me feel awkward talking to him having just watched him fuck a model on screen. It was a long interview and after we finished the formal bit I had a quick look round their offices – the main office was blacked out and dimly lit; one of the directors explaining this is because they like to emulate the sort of environment that punters will be watching their porn – hey, I’m not stupid; obviously this is to prevent prying eyes from passers-by.
As they escorted me back to the main entrance I made small talk by asking how they advertise for models. One of the guys asked, “why, are you interested?” I laughed and said, “No, just curious.”
They explained they had one more guy to see before they made their decision, who evidently was the good-looking guy sat in the lobby, and then shook my hand and I left – what’s the chance the sexy, but far less qualified guy gets offered the job? To tell you the truth, I’m not sure if I could take the job, despite the significant pay increase. I’m no prude, but I just don’t think I could adjust to the point where phrases like ‘cum shot’ replace ‘filing system’ as the day-to-day office vocab. Sex and porn would become so routine and ingrained after a while that you’d become desensitised and it wouldn’t be special anymore.
Oh, well; I’ll wait and see if I’m offered the job and then decide. As I said the money is tempting and I really fancy working in London. If not, they’re offering a thousand quid to star in one of their porn movies…

Sounds like a very interesting experience. I used to regulate elements of the adult entertainment business in my first job after university. I have to admit it never got dull (we got the giggles a lot), and certain titles will stick with me always!! I just hope the role isn’t in customer service or you’ll be getting a lot of “my husband INSISTS he never…”
I’ve spent about 10 years doing public health HIV prevention education with at-risk gay men. It’s surprising how ordinary discussions about quite specific sexual behavior can become so…ordinary. Being up to one’s ears in sexual behavior (doing outreach in adult bookstores, theaters, baths, parks) does have long term consequences, though. The idea of casual sex was pretty much out the window after 10 years of talking about risk and the dire consequences thereof.
Too bad that age and AIDS are both working against the occasional fling, now that time away from that peculiar hothouse atmosphere is making the idea more interesting again
